Neglected but not forgotten

We have all got them i am sure, web sites that have been neglected.

Up until recently, i have ignored the fact that a couple of thousand visitors a month still drop by at an old site of mine. So i thought it time to take a deep breath and get on with re-building it.

It didn’t take that long really – just 2 days to rebuild and take out all those <font> tags!

Its all done now with expression web in the most basic way i could possibly do it.

Its a FrontPage help site and it can be found at

New expression web tutorial for new expression web users

So you have come in search of expression web help, but cannot understand what on earth is going on! All this talk of Divs and CSS has left you feeling numb and confused!

Fear not help is at hand.

It pains me to think that some users are being left behind or feel excluded from using expression web due to a lack of understanding. Who are we to assume, that you will just slip into using expression web and create great sites.  It is wrong of me to assume that you just know what a div or css is.

So this new expression web tutorial is for 2 types of people. Those that don’t care and just want to be able to work the thing, and those that do care and want to understand the inner workings.

Tables: I feel sure you will know what they are and that they can help with page layout. It is familiar ground for frontpage users, so it seems right that somebody should offer a transitional tutorial showing how to use expression web within a table based layout. Note the word transitional. It means to help you move accross from FrontPage but it also means to help you move onto div based design.

This free expression web template tutorial takes you from a blank page through to creating pages from a dwt that you will have built. It is something like an hour long.

After much deliberation and practice, we have now updated our forums to the most recent version of webwiz. (version9)

This upgrade make the forums a little faster and the upgrade went off almost without a hitch.

We will maintain version 9 for now whilst we consider the virtues of version 10 which is currently in alpha testing.

So try us out and see how you like it.

Windows hosting 2008!

The time is coming when we will see windows 2008 hosting services available. This is a great milestone as we have not seen a lot of action in the windows hosting market  since 2003. Our good friends at parcom.net - are preparing some plans which will be available soon – so watch this space.

Do yourself a favour, if you are in the market for a new host, get over to parcom.net and sign up. Crazy Dave is 100% dedicated to customer satisfaction. Daves company is big enough to matter but small enough to care, and he will take care of you and your hosting very well.

Currently, many hosting services will stick a couple of thousand web sites on a single server some cram on many more! Dave keeps his servers at about 400 sites but with the 2008 plans, it is proposed to have only about 250 plans per server.

This is excellent news for you and i as it means that your web site will be much faster and much more stable!

So have a look see what he has on offer. parcom.net

Expression web shopping cart.

I am getting some excellent feedback on the expression web shopping cart and am very busy making some minor adjustments as suggested by the testers.

I am also working on some major stuff that i personally always wanted to see on it but just never got around to doing. But it just takes so long when you actually have to learn new stuff to be able to implement the changes. One such change requires a greater understanding of MS access than i have so it is a case of reading and asking questions to get these changes implemented. However, none of this is affecting the current cart so if you need and easy to use simple and effective way to sell your products and services online. The solution is here. Expression web shopping cart update

Further to my recent post regarding expression web e-commerce, i wanted to update you.

A number of folk have stepped forward to carry out tests and the results so far are very encouraging. The important thing is that many hands make light work! So if you fancy a shopping cart, that is easy to set up locally on your computer, let me know.

All i ask is for some feed back. Suggestions to streamline the process even further.

Thank you

Jim

Login Controls in expression web

Expression web password protect web sites/members only sites is an often requested feature. The login controls are available in expression web, but no easy method of implementation is available.

The often cited solution is to grab a copy of Visual web developer express edition (a free download from MS) and set it up there!

The problem with this is twofold…

1) you have to download another programme

2) you have to learn a little about the new programme

In reality, the setting up of members only web sites is quite simple, if, you are prepared to put the time in.

However, not one to be beaten, i decided to do my research and find a solution that works from within expression web.

I am pleased to report that it is in fact possible to set this whole thing up without the need to get VWD express, nor try to understand what is going on with that product.

The key to setting up password protection is the asp.net web site administration tool that is available with the asp.net development server. the admin tool open up a whole lot more but thats for another day.

I am currently working on a tutorial to explain just how simple this process can be and will post the solution in the next week or so.

If you have login control experiences that you would like to share,  come and have a chat over at our forums.

Expression web shopping cart

I have now completed a shopping cart for expression web, and i am looking for some testers.

The cart looks like this

http://www.expression-web-help.com/ewh5/shoppingcart/category.aspx

Please note it is only for a guide, many of the links do not work although in the download  most do.

This cart is aimed at those who want something in between pay now paypal button and the full blown thing.

I use the term shopping cart loosely as this is actually a backend to integrate with mals-e.com.

So if you would like to test this free of charge, please let me know via the expression web forums.

Thank you jim

expression web hosting from just $1/month

If you want hosting with asp.net v2 and v3, php v4 and v5 e-mail and plenty of buzzers and bells then the Parcom 99cent plan will get you up and running.

They don’t call the owner Crazy Dave for nothing.

Concerned about the quality of service? Trust me it is of the highest caliber. I host all my sites with parcom and have done for over 5 years. Any problems i have had, have been of my own making but Dave and his staff have always been very patient in resolving my issues.

What more could you want.

JIM
